Gaten John Matarazzo, born September 8th, 2002 in New London, Connecticut, is an American actor and musician. He is best known for his role as Dustin Henderson in the Netflix series “Stranger Things”, which has been a huge success. From a young age, Gaten Matarazzo has been dedicated to acting, making his Broadway debut with the play “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” in 2011. In addition, in 2013, he appeared on the AXN series “The Blacklist”. Despite his experience in theater and television, he has not yet made his debut in film.

 

Family and Early Life

Gaten Matarazzo was born and raised in Little Egg Harbour, New Jersey. His parents are Heather and Gaten Matarazzo Sr. He has two sisters named Carmen and Sabrina. From a young age, he began to show an interest in acting, focusing primarily on theater. He made his Broadway debut in 2011 with the musical Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, playing the role of Benjamin. He then worked on several television commercials and played Jesus in Godspell Cast of 2032 (2012).

In 2013, he made his television debut by playing a small role in the popular AXN criminal series, The Blacklist. A year later, he returned to theater by playing Gavroche in Les Misérables (2014), an adaptation of the famous work by Victor Hugo, composed by Claude-Michel Schönberg.

 

Acting Career of Gaten Matarazzo

Three years after his television debut, Matarazzo rose to fame by playing Dustin Henderson in the award-winning Netflix series, Stranger Things. The series has captured the attention of audiences and critics alike since its release in July 2016, and has received numerous awards, including the MTV Movie & TV Awards for Best Show, the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Award for Favorite TV Show, and the SAG Award for Best Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.

In Stranger Things, Matarazzo is part of a group of teenagers who set out to find Will Byers, a character played by Noah Schnapp. Like Dustin, Matarazzo has cleidocranial dysplasia, a genetic condition that affects the development of skull bones and teeth. It is worth mentioning that the actor has participated in multiple campaigns to raise awareness about this condition and help those who suffer from it.

The series stars young actors Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Caleb McLaughlin, Sadie Sink and Noah Schnapp, and also features secondary performances from Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Natalia Dyer, Cara Buono and Joe Keery, among others.

 

Personal Life

Gaten and his friend and co-star of the series, Finn Wolfhard, are part of a band called Work In Progress (WIP) which recently released the songs DreamEater and Waste My Time. He has also covered songs by Paramore, Fall Out Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Pearl Jam and they performed in several cities in the United States.

In 2018, Matarazzo started dating theater actress and internet personality Lizzy Yu.
