His idols of childhood were Stefan Edberg, who in the end would be linked some period as his coach; Boris Becker and Pete Sampras. At the age of 14, Federer was already the national champion of all groups in Switzerland and was chosen to train at the Swiss National Tennis Center in Ecublens.

2001 is one of the most representative years in the history of the Swiss tennis player, because, he would achieve his first professional title, winning in the final of Milan to Julien Boutter. Months later, Federer would give a severe blow to authority beating Pete Sampras in the Wimbledon Open, tournament in which the American had forged the best of his career to consecrate 7 times champion; undoubtedly, this victory directed the spotlight towards the young Federer, even though in this edition he was eliminated in the quarterfinals. Many agree that that afternoon of Wimbledon in which Roger Federer beat Pete Sampras, there was an exchange of testimony, a change of baton in the hands of the young promise that would soon begin to dominate the circuit.
His first Grand Slam would be at Wimbledon in 2003, defeating the Australian Mark Philippoussis in a comfortable final. No doubt, the reign of Roger Federer had begun. Since 2004, he won 11 Grand Slam tournaments of 16 possible, reaching the final in 13 of them; during the 2004, 2005 and 2006 seasons he kept a winning strake` of 92%.
By 2008, Roger Federer faced one of the most difficult years of his career, for the first time in 4 years he is about to finish a season without a Grand Slam title. In addition, he falls for the third consecutive time in the finals of the Open of France, Roland Garros, a tournament that has already become an obsession for the Swiss, and which is now dominated by Rafael Nadal, his greatest rival.
At Wimbledon things are not better, Federer loses to Rafael Nadal the final of the London tournament for the first time in 6 years, which prevents him from accessing his sixth crown at Wimbledon. However, the end of the season would bring a reward, the title of the US Open, his 13th Grand Slam.
Around 2009, Roger would start a completely renewed season. However, he falls in the final of the Australian Open against Rafael Nadal, to see and feel dejected, the Swiss tennis star in one of the most emotional episodes in the history of tennis, to mourn inconsolably at the time of the awarding before the astonished gaze of his contender and the audience of the Rod Laver. The specialized analysts assured that the time to win Roland Garros for the Swiss had already passed, supporting his theory that Roger was not in his best shape. Moreover, Roland Garros had an indestructible competitor, the Spanish Rafael Nadal. However, Roger Federer would give a blow of opinion when beating Rafael Nadal in the final of Madrid, at home, and on brick, announcing that his intentions to seek the French Open had great determination. Federer advanced to the semifinals like Rafa. However, the Spaniard would stumble against the Swede Robin Söderling, losing the first Roland Garros match of his entire career; of course, the reflectors more than in the Swedish rested on the Swiss.
Federer had the great opportunity to reach his most desired trophy, the most elusive, and which he would achieve by beating Söderling, reaching the Grand Slam in the Race (All Grand Slam titles), in one of the most glorious days that tennis has had. Impelled by his recent success in France, Roger is on track to win Wimbledon with a new motivation, to become the best male tennis player in the history of Grand Slam tournaments, a feat he would achieve when he reached his 15th big title. Roger would reach the Australian Open in the 2010 season. For the first time since 2003, in 2011, Roger Federer did not win a Grand Slam tournament, and although the Swiss manage to be crowned in ATP tournaments, there are those who say that time has taken its toll on the performance of the Swiss, who is easily overtaken by his biggest contenders in matches to 5 sets.
In 2012, when overcoming a back injury, Roger, the great Federer would reach his Grand Slam number 17 to obtain the crown of Wimbledon, his seventh crown. From then Roger Federer accuses the inevitable wear of the age, and although his purified technique continues causing chaos, the games to 5 sets are still a difficulty for the Swiss.
Federer would spend 4 years without winning a single Grand Slam, and painful and early eliminations arrive; the analysts echo the facts and assure that: “The Swiss is for big games, but not for big tournaments”. The 2016 season would become atypical for the Swiss, for the first time in his career he would undergo an operation (in 18 years of career). Besides, he would retire early in the season, the first without titles in his career.
In 2017, Roger Federer announces his return to the courts, and although the specialized press does not believe that Roger will get titles soon, without a doubt, his return to the courts captures the attention of the world sport. Federer would reappear in Australia in search of his 18th Grand Slam title. He would begin the first rounds with solvency, showing a renewed tennis, a recovered physique and a strategy that allows him to shorten the points. Surprisingly, Federer would advance to the final, and in it he would meet a Rafael Nadal in similar conditions, a renewed Nadal; playing one of the most epic matches in the history of tennis, looking down on the decisive set, Roger would get his best repertoire to go up the set, take the match, and to the amazement and joy of world assistants and spectators, Roger Federer would reach his 18th Grand Slam, a record breaking title that deepens the worldwide belief that the Swiss are one of the greatest athletes in history.
2017 continues its course, and in an unprecedented event, Roger Federer before the astonished look of the sports world, surprised to win the first Master 1000 of the season, by beating his compatriot Stan, in the final of Indian Wells, and becoming the oldest player to get a Master 1000 title. The next challenge was the second Master 1000 of the season and a challenge known as the Sunshine Double, that is, achieve the titles of Indian Wells and Miami in a row. Roger would start the championship with the mentality that reaching the semifinals would be enough, a great goal fulfilled. Nevertheless, he ended up reaching the final of the contest, where he faced Rafael Nadal, with the antecedent of having defeated him in the semifinal of Indian Wells, and with a streak of three games in his favor of consecutive form, but Federer would be awarded the final, the title, the sunshine double; it would extend his winning streak to four against the Spanish, and would climb to the fourth position of the ATP ranking. In addition, he would show a level, which for the specialized press, is the best of his versions, and yes, at his 35.
At the end of March, Federer announced that he would enter a stage of rest until the next Grand Slam, Roland Garros and that his next big goal will be to win Wimbledon for the eighth time in his career. Weeks before starting Roland Garros, and before his absence during the preparation tour in the clay courts, Federer announces that he will not compete in Roland Garros, a decision that would imply that all his expectations were on Wimbledon.
In his return from his break, and as preparation and adaptation to the grass, Roger Federer debuted in Stuttgart. To the surprise of many, Roger fell in the first round against Tommy Haas, thus adding, just his second loss of the season. However, several analysts do not take for granted that Roger is not in a position to dispute Wimbledon, as he came from a break to competing.
Federer’s next challenge would be Halle’s ATP, a tournament he had already won 8 times, and which would serve as preparation to face Wimbledon. Federer would consecrate for the ninth time, after beating Alexander Zverev in the final by a convincing 6- 1 and 6-3. So then, Roger would reaffirm his status as a favorite to win the Grand Slam of the turf. Although, much of the criticism and the specialized press included Roger Federer in the deck of favorites to win the London Open, the idea that at his 35 achieved a tournament of these dimensions was a great challenge. Roger chose to evade his favoritism, seeing in tennis players like Rafael Nadal, Djokovic and Murray, greater chances of winning the Grand Slam. However, the future of the tournament would leave out these great rivals just before the semifinals while Roger would advance to this instance. Already in the semifinals, his favoritism was unobtainable, was the best pre-classified of the four tennis players who remained in dispute, and the idea that the Grand Slam number 19 and his eighth Wimbledon could arrive, was increasingly possible. Roger would advance to the final, defeating in semifinals Tomas Berdych in straight sets, and that would advance to the Wimbledon final without conceding a single set, in a fact that was not achieved since Rod Laver did. In the final, Marin Cilic awaited him, a tough adversary who until now had performed in great form in London. However, and despite the fact that Roger’s favoritism did not predict an easy development, the match was given in a simple way, a masterful Roger Federer before a Cilic absolutely surpassed by the stage, by the historical appointment, and by his rival. In straight sets, Roger Federer would reach his eighth Wimbledon and his Grand Slam number 19, thus becoming the oldest player to reach that record and those great achievements, surpassing the 1100 victories, reaching his ace number 10,000 and sowing as third seed, with the great expectation of reaching the top of the ATP ranking once again.
A true legend that exhausted by the ink of the world press to cover his feat and limited the qualifiers to describe his sporting greatness. However, 2017 had prepared greater things for Roger Federer. His new marketing agency would devise a unique event, called Laver Cup, a tennis event between selected tennis players from Europe and other parts of the world. In its first edition, the Laver Cup would have a particular ingredient, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal were part of the same team and would pair in the modality of doubles, a fact that generated a great expectation. In the development of the Laver Cup, the European team initially won the international team with great solvency, and the pair of doubles formed by the Swiss and the Spaniard would achieve a tight victory, which left some of the most emblematic postcards in the history of the tennis. However, a Berdych (European team) out of form, and a surprise defeat of Rafael Nadal led to the competition was defined in a final game: Nick Kyrgios vs. Roger Federer. The final was developed in a spectacular way, initially dominated by the young Australian who would take the first set and dominated part of the second. However, Federer would take the game to the final tiebreak, taking the second set in a tie-break; the final tiebreaker was dominated by Kyrgios. Surprisingly, the Swiss managed to overcome the tiebreaker and take the game, in what would be one of the most contested and highest levels games of the 2017 season, giving Europe the first Laver Cup.
2017 did not stop for a Roger who takes the season with caution, dosing efforts. He would be part of the Asian tour playing the Master 1000 of Shanghai, reaching the final, where he would meet again with his eternal rival, Rafael Nadal. Undoubtedly, the changes in the game tool and technique, which the Swiss star incorporated, were fundamental to compensate for the weaknesses that the Spanish had previously exploited in their direct confrontations. The capacity of Federer to subdue Rafael Nadal has been unquestionable in the 2017 season, and in his last confrontations. In the final of the Master 1000 of Shanghai, Roger would overcome with an amazing solvency to the Spaniard, with a score of 6-4, 6-3; in an authentic last, where Nadal had no reaction in any part of the meeting. For Roger, this would mean his fifth consecutive victory against Rafael Nadal, and his Master 1000 number 27.
Federer would be cited as usual in the Basel tournament, making progress without frights to face in the final to the Argentine Juan Martín del Potro. In a very disputed final, the Swiss would impose with partial 6/7, 6/4, 6/3. Achieving this way his eighth title of Basel and seventh title of the season, a fact that would mark without a doubt a return without equal in the history of tennis, a historical renovation.
Although the top of the ATP ranking was getting closer, Federer, faithful to his effort, pillar of his performance at 36, decided to get off the Master 1000 in Paris, so then, the fight to finish the season at the highest of the ranking is resigned, and very sure it will be the Spanish Rafael Nadal who finishes as number 1 in the season.
Roger Federer is preparing to play the much-appreciated tournament of Masters. 2018 would start for Roger Federer very different to 2017, from expectations. It is worth considering that 2017 was a revelation, taking into account the time he spent outside the circuit. However, by the beginning of 2018, Federer’s favoritism was a reality. The season began for the Swiss disputing the Hopman Cup, along with his compatriot Belinda Bencic, getting the title for Switzerland, after 17 years of having achieved it with Martina Hingis. So then, the focus was on the first Grand Slam of the season, the Australian Open, for which, he was considered by the press as the great favorite, despite his 36 years of age. The Australian Open aroused great curiosity, especially to know the level with which the tournament Rafael Nadal would face; the reappearance of Novak Djokovic, and of course, the idea that Federer could defend the title obtained in 2017.
The tournament was advancing without setbacks for Federer, who agreed to final instances without conceding sets. On the contrary, his most representative rivals were left on the road, to be cited in the grand final against Marin Cilic, whom he would defeat by 6/2, 6/7, 6/3, 3/6, 6/1 in a game that extended by five sets and that concluded in a new consecration of the Swiss, who reached the threshold of the 20 titles of Grand Slam, surpassing his own record and until now sowing a big question: How much more can Roger Federer win?
If anything has marked the career of Federer have been his Grand Slam titles. Roger is winner of a total of 90 ATP titles and has won more than 1100 games; he is winner of the Davis Cup for Switzerland and is an Olympic medalist (gold in doubles and silver in singles); he has won 6 ATP Masters tournaments, and holds an endless record of records, such as
