Novak Djokovic Biography

Novak Djokovic is a professional Serbian tennis player, noted for his consistent and penetrating backdrops. He is listed as one of the best in the history of the white sport. He was born on May 22, 1987, in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, and is the son of Srđan Djokovic and Dijana Djokovic. Since an early age he showed an interest in sports, and at 4 years of age, he started playing tennis.

By 1999, Djokovic was still studying elementary school and alternated school with tennis practice. The coach Jelena Genčić recommended the parents of the child, move to another country so that the tennis player had a better training. At that time, the economic and political situation in Serbia was complicated, so the whole family could not move. Finally, his parents decided to send him to Munich, Germany to continue his training at the Academy of tennis coach Nikola Pilic.

In 2011, he reached the final of the Davis Junior Cup for players under 14 years old, where he sadly failed to get the title for his country. In the Junior category of Grand Slam tournaments, his best performance was at the 2004 Australian Open, where he reached the semifinals. In his beginnings as a professional, Djokovic played mainly Futures and Challengers, where he managed to win 3 of each modality from 2003 to 2005.

He won the Metz Open in 2006, with which he managed to obtain his second title in his career. In addition, he was ranked in the Top 20 of the ATP ranking, after reaching the quarterfinals at the Roland Garros (where he faced Rafael Nadal for the first time) and the fourth round of Wimbledon.

 

SEASON 2007

He started the 2007 season by winning the Adelaide Tournament, where he beat the Australian Chris Guccione in the final. He participated in the Australian Open, where he was eliminated in the fourth round by the Swiss Roger Federer. Days later he was champion in Miami and managed to be in the tenth position of the ATP ranking. He played the Montecarlo Master, where he reached the third round. Days later, he was crowned champion of the Estoril Tournament, where he defeated Richard Gasquet in the final. He reached his first Grand Slam semifinal at the French Open, where he was defeated by Rafael Nadal.

He participated in the Vienna Tournament, which managed to win and finish the year as number three in the world. Thanks to his excellent performance, he received a gold badge to the best sportsman of Serbia.

 

SEASON 2008

He started the year with participation in the 2008 Hopman Cup along with his partner Jelena Jánkovic, where they managed to reach the final. However, they were defeated by Serena Williams and Mardy Fish.

Months later, he participated in the Australian Open, where he beat Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in four sets by 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 and 7-6, winning his first Grand Slam title and being the First Serbian tennis player to win the competition. He played the Indian Wells Masters held between March 10 and 23, where he was the champion after defeating Mardy Fish in the final by 4-6, 6-3 and 6-3.

He participated in the Olympic Games in Beijing, where he was defeated in the semifinals by Rafael Nadal, and in doubles by duo Martin Damm and Pavel Vizner from the Czech Republic. Months later, he played the US Open, where he was defeated by Tsonga in the final round. He was proclaimed 2008 Masters Cup champion held between November 9 and 16, winning in the final to Nikolai Davydenko by a score of 6-1 and 7-5. He would finish that season in the third position of the world ranking.

 

SEASON 2009

Novak Djokovic started the season with participation in the Brisbane Tournament in Australia, where he was eliminated in the first round. He participated in the defense of the title of the Australian Open, where unfortunately he had to retire in the quarterfinals, due to heat exhaustion that generated muscle aches and cramps. On March 1, he won the Dubai Tournament, getting her twelfth title in his career as a tennis player. A week later, he tried to defend the Indian Wells title but was eliminated in the quarterfinals.

On May 10, he was crowned champion of the Belgrade Tournament, after beating Lukasz Kubot in the final. At the US Open, Djokovic reached the semifinals, where he lost to Roger Federer 7-6, 7-5 and 7-5.

He won his third title of the year at the China Open, where he beat Marin Cilic in the final in two sets 6-2 and 7-6. For his excellent performance, he regained the position number 3 in the ATP ranking, after having dropped a position. Between November 2 and 8, he participated in the Swiss Indoors, where he managed to beat tennis players like Andreas Beck, Stanislas Wawrinka, Radek Stepanek and Roger Federer whom he beat in the final of the competition.

In Paris-Bercy Djokovic won his first Masters 1000 of the year. He defeated Rafael Nadal in the semifinals by 6-2 and 6-3, and in the final to Gaël Monfils by 6-2, 5-7 and 7-6.

Played the ATP World Tour Finals 2009, where he could not qualify for the semifinals due to his percentage of sets won. He finished the year in position 3 of the world ranking. In addition to be the leader of the ATP World Tour by matches won. He also bequeathed a personal record of five finals and five titles in the same year.

 

SEASON 2010

Between January 18 and 31, he participated in the Australian Open, where he could not reach the finals, after being defeated in the quarterfinals by Tsonga by sets of 6-7, 7-6, 6-1, 3- 6 and 1-6. In spite of the defeat, Djokovic arrived at the best prequalification of his career, being located number 2 in the world. In the month of February, he defended the title of the Dubai Tournament, after defeating the Russian Mikhail Youzhny in the final by 7-5, 5-7 and 6-3. Additionally, he won the first title of the year.

He sought to defend the title of the Open Serbia, but unfortunately had to abandon the competition for a virus. He participated in the French Open, where he was defeated by Jürgen Melzer in five sets by 3-6, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 and 6-4. He was favorite to the dispute of the US Open, beat with some difficulties the initial rounds, and in the semifinals, he faced Roger Federer who won extraordinarily by 6-1, 5-7, 5-7, 6-2 and 7-5. However, in the final Novak Djokovic faced Rafael Nadal, with whom he lost by a score of 4-6, 7-5, 4-6 and 2-6.

Satisfactorily he managed to defend the title of the China Open, after winning in the final to the Spaniard David Ferrer. He played the last tournament of the year at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London, where he was defeated by the Swiss Roger Federer. He finished the season for the fourth consecutive year in the position 4 of the world ranking. Besides, he was awarded the title of Serbian athlete of the year by the Serbian Olympic Committee and Serbian athlete of the year by DSL Sport.

 

SEASON 2011

Novak started the year, taking the title of the Australian Open, after defeating Andy Murray in the final by 6-4, 6-2 and 6-3, reaching his second Grand Slam in his career as a tennis player. He participated in the Tournament of Dubai held between February 21 and 27, where he was a strong candidate to defend the title, and that was the case, as he made it to the final where he defeated Roger Federer by sets 6-6, 6-3. He played the tournament of Indian Wells, where he beat Andréi Golúbev, Ernests Gulbis, Victor Troicki, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, the latter whom he won in the final, winning his second Masters 1000 Indian Wells.

He continued his successful participation in the Miami Tournament, where he also won the title of the competition, winning Rafael Nadal again in the final. As in previous years, he participated in the Belgrade Tournament, where he again managed to defend the title, winning in the final to Spanish Feliciano Lopez 7-6, 7-6 and 6-2. Between the 1st and the 8th of May, he played the Master 1000 of Madrid, where he managed to reach the final in an overwhelming way, where he faced Rafael Nadal who sought to defend the title: the victory was for the Serbian 7-5 and 6-4, managing to achieve his eighth 1000 master in his career.

Days later, he would beat Rafael Nadal in the final of the Rome Masters, becoming the first tennis player to beat Nadal in four Masters 1000 followed. His first trip of the year was at Roland Garros, where he was defeated by Roger Federer in the semifinal round. He participated in the Wimbledon Open, with the aim of becoming the number one in the world. He beat the tennis players Jeremy Chardy, Kevin Anderson, Marcos Baghdatis, Michael Llodra, Bernard Tomic, which managed to qualify for the semifinals, where he beat the Tsonga 7-6 (4), 6-2, 6-7 (9), and 6-3. In the final, he faced Rafael Nadal, whom he won by 6-4, 6-1, 1-6 and 6-3, getting for the first time the Wimbledon title and thus becoming the world’s number 1 for the first time. Motivated by the first place in the world ranking, won the tournament in Canada, where he beat Mardy Fish in the final by 6-2, 3-6 and 6-4, so he became the only one to get 5 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 titles in the same season.

In the Cincinnati Masters, he had to retire in the final against Andy Murray, due to fatigue. In the United States Open, Novak Djokovic was crowned champion, after defeating Rafael Nadal in the final, and thus obtaining the title that he had been elusive in the years 2007 and 2010. He had to retire due to fatigue from the Paris Masters and the ATP World Tour Finals in London, due to the hectic competition throughout the year. Finally, the tennis player culminated a year full of many titles and as the leader in the ATP classification.

 

SEASON 2012

Between January 15 and 29, participated in the Australian Open, where he reached the final and beat Rafael Nadal by 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-7 (5) and 7-5, extending his positive record to seven finals against Nadal. He could not defend the title of the Dubai Open, after falling defeated in the semifinals against Andy Murray. He participated in the Masters of Indian Wells and of Miami. In the first he lost in the semifinals with John Isner 6-7, 6-3 and 6-7, and in Miami he beat Andy Murray in the final by 6-1 and 7-6, which managed to equalize Pete Sampras in the number of Masters 1000 won.

He played the Masters of Monte Carlo, where he had a good start, however, was affected by the death of his grandfather, which made him lose concentration in the following rounds, losing the final against Rafael Nadal. He could not defend the title of the Masters of Rome since he was defeated in the final by Rafael Nadal. Days later, he was defeated again by the Spanish, but this time in the Roland Garros final. He won the Wimbledon Championship, where Novak Djokovic sought to defend the title he had won the previous year. Although he was a finalist, he was defeated by Roger Federer in a tight match 3-6, 6-3, 4-6 and 3-6. The tennis player did not have a string of titles compared to the previous year, so he lost the position 1 of the ATP ranking.

He participated in the Olympic Games in London, where he obtained the fourth place. After the participation in London, he played the Masters 1000 of Canada, where he managed to defend the title beating Richard Gasquet in the final by 6-3 and 6-2. At the US Open, he failed to defend the title of the previous year, after losing the final to Andy Murray by 7-6, 7-5, 2-6, 3-6 and 6-2. On October 7, crowned champion of the China Open, after defeating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final with a score of 7-6 (4) and 6-2.

In the Shanghai Masters, he managed to reach the final against Andy Murray, whom he won in a close match by 5-7, 7-6 (11) and 6-3. For the last tournament of the season, the ATP World Tour Finals, faced in the final the Swiss Roger Federer who won by 7-5, 7-6 and 7-5, managing to win that competition for the second time. He finished the year as number 1 in the world and managed to win the Australian Open, the 1000 Masters of Miami, Toronto and Shanghai, the ATP 500 in Beijing and the ATP World Tour Finals.

 

2013 SEASON

Novak Djokovic started the year, making history in the open of Australia, where he became the first tennis player to win the competition three times in a row, defeating Andy Murray in the final by 6-7 (2), 7-6 (3), 6-3 and 6-2. Between February 18 and 23, he participated in the Dubai tournament, where he was crowned champion for the fourth time in his career, after defeating Tomas Berdych in the final by 7-5 and 6-3. A month later, he played the Indian Wells Masters, where he could not defend the title, after being defeated in the semifinals by the Argentine Juan Martín del Potro.

In the Miami Masters, he was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Tommy Haas, the defeat was so hard for the Serbian, who at the end of the game said: “I have played my worst game in a long time, but I give Tommy credit for his great tactic.” He won the Monte Carlo Masters for the first time, as he managed to win in the final to the Spanish Rafael Nadal. In spite of arriving with confidence at the Masters of Madrid, he was eliminated in the second round by Grigor Dimitrov, after falling by 6-7, 7-6 and 3-6. In the month of October, he was champion of the Beijing Tournament, where he beat Nadal in the final by a score of 6-3, 6-4, without losing the first position in the world, having lost other previous competitions.

He continued in Asia, and took the title of the Masters 1000 of Shanghai, winning in the final to Juan Martin del Potro by 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (3). He managed to win that championship for the second time in a row. His winning streak continued at the Masters 1000 in Paris, where on the way to the final he beat Roger Federer, and in the decisive match, he defeated David Ferrer, managing to be the third player to win the last three tournaments of the season. He ended the season with the title of the ATP World Tour Finals, wherein the group stage he beat Roger Federer

, Del Potro, and Gasquet. In the semifinals, he beat Wawrinka and in the grand finale, he saw the faces of Rafael Nadal whom he defeated 6-3 and 6-4. He also lost the Davis Cup final, despite having won his two individual matches.

 

2014 SEASON

He started the 2014 season, winning the exhibition tournament in Abu Dhabi, where he beat Tsonga and David Ferrer in the semifinal and final respectively. He participated in the Australian Open, where he was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Stanislas Wawrinka, with a score of 6 -2, 4-6, 2-6, 6-3, 7-9. In the month of February, he played the Dubai Tournament, where he was not lucky, as he was eliminated in the semifinals by Roger Federer. Between March 3 and 16, he played the Masters of Indian Wells where on the way to the final he beat Victor Hanescu, Alejandro Gonzalez, Marin Cilic, Julien Benneteau and John Isner. Already in the final, he faced Roger Federer, whom he won by partial of 3-6, 6-3 and 7-6 (3) and achieved his third crown in that tournament. He won his fourth Masters 1000 title in Miami on March 30, beating Rafael Nadal 6-3, 6-3.

Months later, he suffered an injury and he could not participate in the Madrid Masters. However, he recovered successfully for the Masters of Rome, where he won the title after beating Rafael Nadal 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. In the third Grand Slam of the year and The only one on Wimbledon turf, reached the final, where he finally beat the Swiss Roger Federer 6-7 (7), 6-4, 7-6 (4), 5-7 and 6-4. In that final Novak Djokovic and the Swiss faced for the first time in the final of that competition.

In the US Open held between August 25 and September 8, he reached the semifinal round, where he was defeated by the Japanese Kei Nishikori on a score of 4-6, 6-1, 6-7 (4), 3-6. For the Beijing Tournament, Djokovic got a run of 21 consecutive victories in that competition by beating Tomas Berdych 6-0 and 6-2 to get the 46th title in his career. Djokovic closed the season by winning the ATP World Tour Finals, after Roger Federer did not show up for the final because of a back injury.

 

SEASON 2015

Djokovic was appointed the Australian Open champion on February 1, after defeating Andy Murray 7-6 (1), 3-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0. In March, Djokovic won the Masters 1000 of Indian Wells and Miami, where he beat Roger Federer and Andy Murray in the finals, respectively. Novak acknowledged feeling at the climax of his professional career, so he said: “This success is not the result of a tournament or a couple of weeks of work. It is a consequence of many years and many hours of training and commitment. That is the only way I have to stay on top. I can have many more years at this level”

He was champion of Monte Carlo Masters and Masters of Rome, where he beat Tomáš Berdych and Roger Federer respectively in the finals. On July 12, he beat Roger Federer again, but this time in the final of the Wimbledon Championship with partial of 7-6, 6-7, 6-4 and 6-3. In the Masters of Shanghai, he managed to beat the Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-2, 6-4, getting his third title in that competition. For the Masters 1000 in Paris beat Murray in the final and achieved his tenth title of the season, being the first to win six Masters 1000 in the same course.

He finished the season in the number one position in the ATP classification.

 

SEASON 2016

Novak Djokovic started the season in the Doha tournament, where he was proclaimed champion, defeating Spanish Rafael Nadal in the final. Days later, he got his 6th title of the Australian Open, after an excellent performance in the competition and winning the final against Andy Murray. In the Master 1000 of Indian Wells, he was the champion for the fifth time after winning by 6-2. and 6-0 to Milos Raonic. He also became the tennis player more times being champion of that competition. In addition, he managed to match Rafael Nadal with 27 Masters 1000 titles each. He was champion for the sixth time of the Miami Masters 1000, as he defeated Kei Nishikori in the final, and managed to equal Andre Agassi with 6 titles each in this tournament.

Also, he became the top winner of Masters 1000 with 28 titles. Months later, he reached his Masters 1000 title number 29, since he was the winner of the Madrid Masters. He was crowned champion of Roland Garros, which was the only Grand Slam that he lacked in his showcase of titles, after winning the Final Andy Murray by 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 and 6-4. Time later, Novak Djokovic won the Toronto Master 1000 after beating Kei Nishikori in the final by 6-3 and 7-5, reaching 30 Master 1000 titles. He made part of the Serbian delegation that participated in the Rio Olympics where he was eliminated by the Argentinian Juan Martín del Colt.
