Christopher Froome, better known as Chris Froome, is an English route cyclist, recognized for being a professional in the UCI since 2007 and being featured in several of the world’s cycling races such as the Tour de France. He was born on May 20, 1985, in Nairobi, Kenya, because his parents Clive Froome and Jane Flatt, originally from England, were in Africa for work reasons.
Chris Froome woke up the passion for cycling when his brother May gave him an iron bike, with which he took walks in the Kenyan savanna. In Kenya, he started cycling in the mountain bike mode.
In 2000, his family moved to Johannesburg, South Africa, where he started to practice cycling on the road. He studied at the Saint John School in Johannesburg, where he acquired the Oxford accent and manners of ‘gentleman’ and managed to learn to live away from the family. He also studied economics, but one year after finishing his degree he stopped studying to dedicate himself to cycling.
Between 2006 and 2007 he represented Kenya in the U23 World Championships and in the month of May 2008, he received the British nationality.
Chris Froome began his career as a professional cyclist in 2007, joining the team “Team Konica Minolta” with whom he won the sixth stage of the Tour of Japan. In South Africa, he trained with Robert Hunter, who saw his excellent skills and recommended him to the “Barloworld” team; in the month of September of that year, he signed for the British team, with the aim of running the 2008 season. At the end of 2007, he was chosen by the United Kingdom team to participate in the World Championships to be held in the Italian town of Varese the following year.
For the year 2009, he won the Giro del Capo II, beating Jay Thompson and Daryl Impey. A year later, he signed a contract with the British team “Sky Professional Cycling Team.”
In the 2011 season, after recovering from Bilharzia, he was a protagonist in several of the cycling competitions. In September of that same year, he participated as a gregarious partner of his teammate Bradley Wiggins in the Tour of Spain. However, his excellent performance in the time trial, in the high mountains and a stage victory allowed the competition to finish in the second position of the individual general classification. For the year 2012, he prepared to face the Tour de France, where he managed to win the seventh stage and finished in second place in the general classification, behind his teammate Bradley Wiggins.
Chris Froome was part of the United Kingdom delegation to face the Olympic Games in London 2012, where he participated in the Time Trial and won the bronze medal. The effort made in the Olympic Games, made him arrive with fatigue to the Tour of Spain, where he was the leader of his team after the absence of Bradley Wiggins. In spite of the accumulated fatigue, he was placed in the fourth position of the general classification.
In 2013, Chris Froome started the season with the victories in the Tour of Oman, a stage in the Tirreno-Adriatico, the Critérium Internacional, the general of the Tour de Romandía, and a stage and the overall classification of the Dauphiné Criterium. Those victories served him as preparation to face the tour of France, which managed to win with more than 4 minutes of difference on the Colombian Nairo Quintana.
He started the 2014 season with a preparatory calendar for the Tour. In the month of February, he managed to win the Tour of Oman; after finishing the competition, back pain and severe flu led him away from some competitions. He returned to competition in the month of April, to participate in the Tour of Romandía, a competition that managed to win successfully. For the month of June, he ran the Critérium del Dauphiné where he won the first two stages and was the leader of the race until the penultimate stage, where he lost the title of the competition with Alberto Contador.
In the month of July participated in the Tour de France, where he could not defend his title since he suffered 3 accidents in 2 stages of the competition, which caused a fracture in the left wrist and another in the right hand, so who had to leave the Tour.
After recovering from his injuries, he participated in the Vuelta a España, where he managed to place second in the general classification and win the title of the most combative cyclist of the round.
Chris Froome started the 2015 season, with victories in competitions such as the Vuelta a Andalucía and the Critérium del Dauphiné, as well as participating in other races, with the aim of preparing for the Tour de France.
On July 4, 2015, he began his participation in the Tour, where he remained strong in the lead in the course of the competition, taking great advantage to his opponents, in addition to winning the first stage of the mountain. In the final stages of the Tour, Nairo Quintana cut him a lot of time. However, it was not enough for him to take away the title of the competition. At the end of August of that year, he participated in the Vuelta a España, a competition he had to abandon due to a crash at the beginning of stage number 11.
The cyclist started the 2016 season running the Volta a Catalunya, where the competition ended in the eighth position. On April 26 he began his participation in Tour de Romandía, where he won a stage, but he did not manage to finish even in the top 10 of the competition. In the month of June, he managed to win the Critérium del Dauphiné. In the month of July, he managed to win his third Tour de France, taking more than 4 minutes apart from Romain Bardet and also winning 2 stages.
